  5. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1) (SHMT) [1] catalyzes the transfer
  6. of the  hydroxymethyl  group  of  serine  to  tetrahydrofolate  to  form 5,10-
  7. methylenetetrahydrofolate and   glycine.   In  vertebrates,  it  exists  in  a
  8. cytoplasmic and  a  mitochondrial  form  whereas  only   one form is  found in
  9. prokaryotes. Serine    hydroxymethyltransferase   is   a   pyridoxal-phosphate
  10. containing enzyme.  The  pyridoxal-P  group  is  attached  to a lysine residue
  11. around which the sequence is highly conserved in all forms of the enzyme.
  12.
  13. -Consensus pattern: [ST](4)-H-K-[ST]-L-x-G-x-R-[GSA](2)
  14.                     [K is the pyridoxal-P attachment site]
  15. -Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
  16. -Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
  17. -Last update: June 1994 / Pattern and text revised.
